Glasgow’s premier experimental music festival Counterflows present their infamous clubnights this year at the Glee Club. Extra PA will be loaded in and experimental club sounds take over the dance floor with sets by I-Jahbar & Bokeh Edwards and Mother & Nova.
Duppy Gun’s prime MC I-Jahbar and Bokeh Version’s head honcho Bokeh Edwards (DJ) team up to bring their twisted, futuristic dancehall and dub soundsystem music to the UK for the first time. Born in the Truro District, Westmoreland (Jamaica) I-Jahbar started DJing, MCing and dancing in his local communities in the mid-90s. He first teamed up with Duppy Gun (LA/Jamaica based experimental dub/dancehall collective) after a meeting with The Congos in 2013, and to this day continued a strong relationship with the collective; collaborating internationally and toasting over various producers beats, as well as working to foster other local Jamaican artists in his community. Bristol-based Bokeh Versions have been solid supporters of I-jahbar and Duppy Gun productions, releasing the stunning ‘Miro Tape’ last year alongside constant slews of genre-bending soundsystem music. We can’t see what they come up with together on the Counterflows dance floor.
Opening night will be a special elector/MC session by the Kingpin of the experimental and underground dance community Mother with mic-work by Nova.
Mother (aka Mark Maxwell) runs the Heated Head label, Concrete Cabin night and is one of the main cats at Glasgow institution Rubadub. Having cut teeth as a teenager working on the late John Peels legendary radio shows, he’s gone on to become one of the most important figures in the Glasgow music scene . An impeccable DJ and selector, he can bang out techno, grime, dubstep, dancehall and experimental sets better than most international overpaid goons on the Silicon Valley touring circuit. The real deal.
On MC duties is Nova: a rap vocal project, a way to vent frustrations, boast achievements and express wants for the future. Over selected beats of a grime, bass and hip-hop nature, Nova’s debut release, Risin’ Up mixtape, featuring singer Theta, is out now on all major platforms. The tape is made up of nine tracks, three originals produced by Demonize, Mumbla and Nova Scotia out now, with lyrical content covering race, gender, class and the struggles that exist within these identity politics.
