Glasgow’s premier experimental music festival Counterflows present their infamous clubnights this year at the Glee Club. Extra PA will be loaded in and experimental club sounds take over the dance floor with sets by Gabber Modus Operandi, Akumu and Ribeka.
Promising potent, unusual fusions of “the sacred, the stupid, and the fun,” Indonesian duo Gabber Modus Operandi exhibit a penchant for all things outrageous. After cutting their teeth at local parties and punk gigs in Denpasar, the duo banded together to experiment with and amalgamate the evil energies of gabber, driving rhythms of footwork, percussive patterns of funkot (an Indonesian dance music subgenre), and wildness of jathilan (a traditional Indonesian trance dance in which spirits possess a dancer’s body, challenging one to become more animal and more wild). They bring their infamous live show to the UK for the 1st time on the Counterflows dance floor.
Glasgow based, but of half Japanese origin, DJ AKUMU caught our attention with her thunderous mixes, reflecting her love of survival horror videogames. Hard drum and new experimental dance sounds weave together for a full-frontal dancefloor onslaught.
Over the past few years Becky Marshall, AKA Ribeka, has emerged as a key figure in the Scottish electronic music scene. By day she juggles work as a freelance documentary producer, with a role as an A&R for pioneering independent label Mute Records and a weekend job at Glasgow institution RubadubRecords. By night, she has steadily built a reputation as one of Glasgow’s most exciting DJs. Although she is well known for her love of industrial, post punk and minimal synth (co-running cult Glasgow night So Low alongside Optimo’s JD Twitch, artist Katie Shannon and composer Iona Fortune), she is equally at home delving through house and techno’s weirder fringes. She is a regular fixture at renowned Glasgow club, La Cheetah, where she runs experimental dance party LT and frequently plays back to back with friend and fellow Glasgow selector Sofay. Over the past year has comfortably warmed the room for some of dance music’s biggest hitters – from Call Super and Objekt, to DJ Stingray, to Vladimir Ivkovic.
